here’s another one of my crafts from years ago (back when i was going to baby showers on what seemed like a monthly basis)! they are boo-boo bunnies. you know, those things that you use to put ice in to place on “boo-boos”. actually, you use them to place candy or any other small treat in for baby shower favors (wrapped in tulle). i can’t remember where i got the idea. it wasn’t original. i just remember that i’ve been making them for a while.
the instructions are as follows:

Figure_01Figure 1

Supplies: cheap washcloths (the cheaper the better – easier to tie with ribbon), 1/8” wide ribbon, small googly eyes, small pom poms. (I got the washcloths at WalMart and everything else at Michaels’s [craft store]).

Fold washcloth diagonally.

Grasp washcloth with thumb and finger (now would be a good time to get some help tying the ribbon).

Tie the ribbon around the fat folded end (you will need help to tie this tight).

Use hot glue gun to place googly eyes and tiny pom pom for nose.

now that i think i’ve got the blogging basics down, i went and dug up another cake project from last year. here is my son’s dinosaur cake (first attempt). i used boxed cake…again! i think it tastes the best. i only had to use one box and made 2 round cake layers. then i cut one round layer in half and stood them up on the cut edge (with a little frosting on the base and in between for “glue”).

Stegosaurus_01

next i used my son’s dinosaur toy as a model and began carving the other round layer into dinosaur “parts” (legs, tail, head).

i used a wilton’s star attachment (the one you use for all of those character cakes) and white canned frosting tinted with green food coloring and covered the dinosaur.

Stegosaurus_02

for the plates on the back, i used those 100 calorie pack oreos. the spikes on the tail are a korean chocolate covered pretzel-type stick called “peppero” (i bought them at an asian food store). they are also called “pocky”.

final project.

my pride and joy

November 7, 2007

this is my latest pride and joy. i tried my hand at making a fondant cake. i have made a few “frosting” cakes, but have always liked the look of fondant cakes. my brother got married in april and my sister-in-law asked me to make a cake for her bridal shower. here are a few pictures:

the cake is boxed betty crocker or duncan hines, or whatever.

Layering the Cake

the filling was a barefoot contessa recipe for chocolate mousse. the icing (you need icing under fondant to “glue it to the cake”) is Wilton boxed icing (you can use canned frosing from the grocery store).

Iced Cake

the fondant is Wilton’s Ready-To-Use White Rolled Fondant (from a box!) (http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=710-2076&killnav=1) (soooo easy)!!

Fondant Cake

i bought the flowers from Wendy Kromer’s site (http://www.wendykromer.com/shop/index.php) for $28.

Sugar Paste Dogwood Flowers

and the branches are pre-made, pre-colored icing in a tube from our local super market. gotta love it!

Final Product

let’s get started!
